How RoomTone Handles Your Microphone

RoomTone’s entire premise is a microphone doing something useful for five seconds a night. That only works if people actually trust it — so here is exactly what happens when you tap Match My Room, in plain language, with nothing glossed over.

The microphone is off until you tap Match My Room

RoomTone never listens in the background. It doesn’t listen during onboarding, while the app is idle, or while you sleep. The only moment the microphone activates is when you tap Match My Room and grant permission — and even then, iOS shows its own orange microphone indicator for as long as it’s on, alongside RoomTone’s own on-screen indicator. If you don’t see that indicator, nothing is listening.

What actually happens in those five seconds

Each capture lasts three to five seconds and stops automatically. The audio is turned into a frequency spectrum in memory, on your device, and then it’s gone — it is never written to a file, never cached, never placed in a database, and never transmitted anywhere. There’s no code path in RoomTone that sends audio off the device, and no server of ours that could receive it even if there were.

What’s kept isn’t a recording

What RoomTone actually keeps afterward is a small set of numbers: frequency-band magnitudes, an overall loudness value, a classification label like “low rumble” or “broadband hiss,” and a timestamp. These describe the acoustics of your room. They are not audio, they can’t be converted back into audio, and nothing said in the room while a sample was captured can be recovered or reconstructed from them.

You can skip it entirely

Match My Room is the differentiator, not a requirement. If you decline microphone access, RoomTone still works — the full sound library, the sleep timer, background playback, and your history all function normally. You won’t be repeatedly asked to reconsider, and you can change the permission at any time in iOS Settings.
